Nintendo DS is one of the most popular handheld gaming console developed and sold by Nintendo and it is cool too. Very cool. The popularity of Nintendo emulators uplifted with the invention of Gameboy advanced family to Nintendo 3DS family in the year 2011. Initially, it was just an experimental platform. Later it has become some thing which can interact with most of the awesome game series today.
There are mainly five highly successful models of the Nintendo DS line unique to each other.
- DS Lite
- 3DS and 3DS XL
This was developed and released by Nintendo as a dual screen handheld gaming console. Nintendo DS stands for Nintendo Developer system or Nintendo Dual Screen and it has introduced so many novel features to the handheld gaming world. Some of them are a built-in microphone, wireless connectivity etc. The clamshell design of the screens is similar to that of Gameboy. But unlike that, Nintendo has the ability to connect multiple DS consoles with one another using Wi-fi connection without any existing wireless connection.
Upper half of the DS screen was a basic LCD screen, where the other lower half was a touch screen. Lower screen was the one mostly used for interactive play. This was the first of Nintendo line and was considered as the third pillar. Because it was meant to complement the existing consoles like Gameboy and Gamecube. However, later on, it became a console with high sales and a wide range of compatibility and came out as a successor to the game boy series.

Nintendo DS Lite
This is also a dual screen handheld gaming console and it’s a creation of Nintendo. There were many changes than the original Nintendo DS and all of them were improvements. It has become slimmer and the brightness of the screen has been increased in the latest version. The light weight of the designed helped to increase its popularity being more easy to use as a handheld gaming console. Initially, in 2006, it was released to use in countries like Australia, North America, Europe, New Zealand like countries and ultimately spread in the whole world with 94 million units as of December 2013.
Created and launched in Japan on 2008. Development of the console has been started in 2006 and handheld was unveiled in 2008. After many conferences at Tokyo, it was concluded that Nintendo needs to build slimmer handheld consoles than DSi model. But it was asked to include a larger screen than DS lite version. Therefore Nintendo Gameboy cartridge has been removed and the process of portability improvement has been started. Although there were few changes to do, the developers were careful enough not to harm the durability of the device. the resulted design of the DSi was similar to that of DS Lite.
But it was enclosed with many improved features such as two digital cameras, internal and external storage, direct connection to online Nintendo DSi shop. The latest features facilitated ways to personalize the device encouraging the game players to get a gaming console unique to them. Other than these features, it has the ability to support physical media with DSi specific features and DS titles.

Nintendo DSi XL
Most advanced model of Nintendo family comprising of many improved features. It was released in 2009 and the main feature of that is the increased viewing angle. Some of them are larger screen size, overall greater size, than the previous models. Although this is the fourth member of Nintendo family, it had a pure size variation than all others making it distinct from all others. This is the first console which included an improved angle on the screen. Therefore it became popular as a portable system which is enjoyed by many people. Simply this invented a novel way of playing the games as it can be shared by multiple players to take part in the same gameplay while keeping the console steadily on table in the living room.
DSi XL is reported as the gaming console which has the largest dimensions of all. That is composed of two 4.2 inch wide LCD screens with same high resolution. Battery life has been improved using multiple changes in the brightness settings. For example, the batteries last 13 to 17 hours by setting dimmest settings in the brightness. Speaker enclosures of the device are also larger in size which ultimately helps to increase the volume of the sound.
Nintendo 3DS and 3D XL
Other than these, there are two other models in the Nintendo line as Nintendo 3DS and 3D XL. The 3Ds form of Nintendo consoles was released in 2010 and it offered the ability to play 3D games without using special glasses. The 3DS form was with two 3D cameras with the ability to take multi-dimensional photos. The version 3D XL came up later with an even larger screen including almost all the features of 3DS version.
However, the DS version is considered as the most advanced of them all with the highest memory capacity, battery life, screen dimensions and many other improved features which have been incorporated to give users a gameplay which they are always dreaming of.
